Sambar Powder

  • Coriander seeds 1 cup
  • Cumin seeds 1/4 cup
  • White sesame seeds 1/4 cup
  • Fenugreek seeds 2 Tsp
  • Mustard seeds 2 Tsp
  • Asafetida 1tsp
  • Curry leaves 15-20
  • Dried Red whole chilli 15-20
  • Cloves 4-6


Sambar is a very famous and authentic delicacy from Southern India, without sambar its not a complete meal for them. Sambar is a lentil and vegetable based stew or chowder cooked with a tamarind broth, coconut  and some masala items. Normally sambar made with roasting fresh ingredients and grind along some fresh coconut,  its a time consuming,  in busy schedule we need some quick option to do something tasty and easy, hence  store some these type of homemade powders in ur kitchen and make cooking easy. Generally in  south india u will get  varieties of sambars, in karnataka only u can see many variations, here i am showing how western ghat or sahyadri mountain range (Malenadu) brahmins prepares sambar powder. 

Dry Roast all the items seperatly, mentioned in ingredients, and allow it to cool.

Then grind and make a fine powder  allowagain to cool down.

After half an hour pour this powder to airtight container and store it.
